From the peaceful shores of Deoriatal Lake to the breathtaking summit of Chandrashila, this trek combines natural beauty, spiritual significance, and panoramic Himalayan views in a way few treks can.

A Summit That Rewards Every Step

The highlight of this trek is undoubtedly the Chandrashila Summit. Standing at an altitude of 3,683 meters, the summit offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the Indian Himalayas.

As the trail climbs above the tree line, the vast Himalayan skyline slowly unfolds before your eyes. On a clear day, trekkers can witness magnificent peaks such as Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Trishul, Kedar Dome, Bandarpoonch, Kedarnath Peak, and Nanda Ghunti stretching across the horizon.

The sunrise from Chandrashila is an unforgettable experience. As the first golden rays illuminate the snow-covered peaks, the entire mountain range glows in shades of orange and gold. It is a moment that often becomes the most cherished memory of the trek.

A Perfect Blend of Adventure and Accessibility

One of the reasons trekkers love the Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek is that it delivers the excitement of a Himalayan summit climb without requiring extensive trekking experience.

The trail is moderately challenging, making it suitable for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. The gradual ascent, changing landscapes, and final push to the summit create a true mountaineering experience while remaining accessible to most adventure enthusiasts.

Whether it is your first Himalayan trek or your tenth, Chandrashila offers the thrill of standing on a summit surrounded by endless mountain ranges.

More Than Just a Summit Trek

While Chandrashila is the crown jewel of the journey, the trek offers much more along the way.

The adventure begins at the beautiful Deoriatal Lake, a serene alpine lake surrounded by dense forests. On calm mornings, the crystal-clear waters perfectly reflect the majestic Chaukhamba massif, creating one of the most iconic views in Uttarakhand.

As the trail continues, trekkers pass through enchanting oak and rhododendron forests, peaceful meadows, and hidden mountain paths that showcase the untouched beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas.

Every section of the trek presents a different landscape, ensuring there is never a dull moment on the trail.

Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek Difficulty Level

The Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila trek is one of the most beautiful and rewarding weekend treks in Uttarakhand. Known for its stunning Himalayan views, the highest Shiva temple in the world, and rhododendron forests, it attracts thousands of adventure lovers every year.

But if you are planning this adventure, one question must be on your mind: How difficult is the Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila trek?

The short answer is: It ranges from Easy to Moderate.

Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced mountaineer, here is a detailed, honest breakdown of the trek’s difficulty level and everything you need to know before putting on your trekking shoes.

Trek Gradient

The trek can be divided into two distinct phases, and both have different difficulty levels:

Chopta to Tungnath (3.5 km) | Moderate Ascent:

This first leg of the trek features a well-defined, stone-paved path. While there are some steep sections, the gradual altitude gain makes it manageable for everyone, including families and first-timers.

Tungnath to Chandrashila Peak (1.5 km) | Steep & Demanding:

Once you cross the Tungnath Temple, the real test begins. This 1.5 km stretch is short but steep, and you will gain altitude rapidly. While it requires more stamina and leg power, the good news is that it is not technically difficult—no ropes or rock-climbing skills are needed.

Altitude

Understanding the elevation gain is crucial for any Himalayan trek. Here is what you are dealing with:

Chopta (Base Camp): 2,680 meters (8,790 feet)

Tungnath Temple: 3,680 meters (12,073 feet)

Chandrashila Peak: 4,000 meters (13,123 feet)

Pro Tip on AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness): Since you start from Chopta (which is already quite high), your body gets a head start on acclimatization. While mild symptoms like a light headache or shortness of breath are possible near the peak, serious altitude sickness is rare. Just stay hydrated and don't rush your pace.

Trek Duration

The Chopta Chandrashila trek is the perfect option for those who don’t want to walk for days.

Chopta to Tungnath: 3 to 4 hours (at a relaxed, comfortable pace).

Tungnath to Chandrashila: 1 to 2 hours.

Total Round Trip: Roughly 6 to 7 hours.

Because it’s a single-day trek from Chopta and back, it is highly manageable for people with average fitness levels.

Weather Conditions

The difficulty of this trek changes drastically depending on the season you choose to visit.

Season

Difficulty Level

Trail Conditions

Summer & Autumn (April–June, Sept–Nov)

Easy to Moderate

Clear skies, pleasant weather, dry paths, and no snow. Perfect for beginners.

Winter (December–March)

Moderate to Challenging

Thick snow, icy trails, and slippery conditions. Requires extra caution and effort.

In winter, the snow-covered peak looks magical, but walking on hard ice can be tricky. You might want to carry micro spikes or trekking poles during these months.

Physical Fitness Requirements

Do you need to be an athlete to complete this trek? Absolutely not.

However, basic physical fitness will make your experience much more enjoyable. If you can walk uphill for 4 to 6 hours with short breaks, you can easily pull this off.

How to prepare: If you are a beginner, start doing basic cardio exercises like walking, jogging, or cycling 2-3 weeks before the trek. This will build your stamina and save your calves from aching the next day!

Trail Condition and Safety

One of the best things about the Chopta Tungnath trek is its well-maintained trail.

The Path: It features concrete and stone steps up to the temple, which turns into a clear dirt trail leading up to the Chandrashila summit.

Safety: There are no dangerous ridges or technical sections. It is safe enough for kids and elderly family members who are in good health.

Gear Needed: No technical gear like harnesses or crampons is required for most of the year. However, a pair of trekking poles is highly recommended to reduce pressure on your knees during the descent.

Solo Trekking vs. Group Trekking

Can you do the Chopta trek alone? Yes, easily!

The trail is highly popular, well-marked, and always bustling with locals and fellow trekkers. You won't get lost.

However, if you are trekking in the peak of winter (Jan-Feb) when snow hides the trail, hiring a local guide or joining a trekking group is a smart and safe choice.

Food and Accommodation

You don't need to carry heavy camping gear or survival food rations for this trek.

On the Trail: There are several small tea stalls along the route serving hot tea, maggi, and snacks to keep your energy high.

At the Base: Chopta offers plenty of budget-friendly options, ranging from cozy swiss tents and eco-lodges to basic guesthouses.

The views from the Chandrashila peak—including a 360-degree panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba are worth every single bit of effort
