The Roopkund Trek is one of those Himalayan journeys where the trail itself becomes a story. Set deep in Uttarakhand at around 4,800 metres (15,750 ft), the trek combines dramatic mountain scenery, vast alpine meadows, ancient legends and one of the most intriguing archaeological discoveries in the Himalayas.
Roopkund is popularly called “Skeleton Lake” because human remains can be seen around the lake when the surrounding snow melts. But the skeletons are only one part of what makes this trek so fascinating. The route also takes you through the spectacular Ali and Bedni Bugyals, dense Himalayan forests, high-altitude camps and landscapes dominated by peaks such as Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.
For trekkers looking for more than just a mountain walk, Roopkund offers a rare combination of adventure, natural beauty, culture and mystery.
Why Should You Do the Roopkund Trek?
There are plenty of Himalayan treks, but Roopkund stands apart because of the variety of experiences packed into one journey.
1. The Mystery of Skeleton Lake
The biggest attraction is, of course, Roopkund Lake. Once the snow around the lake recedes, human skeletal remains become visible along its edges. Their origin has fascinated researchers for decades, and scientific studies have revealed that the remains represent people from different groups and periods.
This unusual combination of archaeology and wilderness gives the destination an atmosphere unlike most trekking routes in India.
2. Panoramic Himalayan Views
The trail opens up to impressive views of some of Uttarakhand's best-known Himalayan peaks. Trishul and Nanda Ghunti are particularly striking from the high meadows, while clear weather can reveal an expansive mountain panorama.
For photographers, the constantly changing light across the peaks makes the route especially rewarding.
3. The Magnificent Ali and Bedni Bugyals
One of the biggest reasons people remember the Roopkund Trek is the long stretch through high-altitude meadows.
Ali Bugyal spreads across broad rolling slopes, creating a huge green carpet during the warmer months. Nearby, Bedni Bugyal offers an even more dramatic setting, with mountain peaks rising beyond the meadow.
Walking across these open grasslands after spending hours in the forest feels like entering a completely different world.
4. A Trail That Never Feels the Same
The landscape changes repeatedly as you gain altitude. You may begin beneath tall oak and rhododendron trees, move into open meadows, cross rocky sections and eventually encounter snow-covered terrain near the higher camps.
This constant change keeps the trek visually exciting from beginning to end.
5. Himalayan Flora and Wildlife
The lower sections of the trail pass through rich forest ecosystems where oak, rhododendron, maple and other Himalayan trees thrive. Depending on the season and luck, trekkers may spot birds such as the Himalayan Monal and Himalayan griffon, while musk deer are among the wildlife associated with the region.
Spring also brings colourful alpine flowers and blooming rhododendrons to the landscape.
6. Mythology Around Nanda Devi
Roopkund is closely connected with the cultural traditions surrounding Goddess Nanda Devi. The wider region forms part of the traditional route associated with the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, a major pilgrimage in Uttarakhand traditionally held at intervals of about 12 years.
This spiritual connection adds another layer to an already fascinating trek.
7. Memorable High-Altitude Camping
Camping at places such as Ali Bugyal, Bedni Bugyal, Patar Nachauni and Bhagwabasa is an experience in itself.
Away from city lights, the night sky becomes incredibly clear. Early mornings bring cold mountain air, while sunrise can gradually paint the surrounding peaks in shades of gold and orange.
Major Highlights of the Roopkund Trek
The real charm of Roopkund lies in how many different experiences the trail brings together. From enormous meadows to a mysterious glacial lake, every major stop has its own character.
Ali Bugyal
Located at roughly 3,450 metres (11,350 ft), Ali Bugyal is one of the most spectacular alpine meadows on the route.
During spring and summer, the slopes turn green and may be dotted with wildflowers. In autumn, the meadow takes on warmer golden and brown tones. The wide-open landscape, grazing livestock and distant Himalayan peaks create an unforgettable setting.
It is one of those places where you naturally want to slow down and simply enjoy the view.
Bedni Bugyal
Bedni Bugyal is often regarded as the highlight of the trek, and it is easy to understand why.
The enormous meadow provides expansive views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. Bedni Kund, a small sacred water body, adds cultural significance to the area and is associated with local traditions and the Nanda Devi pilgrimage.
Sunrise and sunset are particularly beautiful here, when the
surrounding mountains begin to glow under changing colours.
Roopkund Lake
At approximately 4,800 metres, Roopkund is the destination that gives the trek its name.
The small glacial lake is surrounded by rugged mountain terrain and remains snow-covered for much of the year. When the ice melts, skeletal remains around the lake become visible, giving rise to its famous nickname, Skeleton Lake.
The mystery surrounding these remains has helped make
Roopkund internationally known.
Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra Route
The Roopkund region is connected with the traditional
pilgrimage route of the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra.
The pilgrimage carries deep religious and cultural
importance in Uttarakhand and is associated with the journey of Goddess Nanda
Devi. The traditions, stories and rituals connected with the yatra have been
passed down through generations.
For trekkers, this connection provides an opportunity to experience a landscape that is not only geographically significant but also deeply rooted in local culture.

The Roopkund Trek is a challenging high-altitude journey, and understanding the terrain, weather and altitude before starting is essential. The trail includes steep ascents, rocky sections, snow-covered stretches and exposed high-altitude terrain. Weather conditions can also change quickly, especially as you approach the upper camps.
At Himalayan Advent, our trek leaders and support team closely monitor trail and weather conditions throughout the trek so that the journey remains as safe and comfortable as possible.
Roopkund Trek Terrain
The trail to Roopkund is not a gentle walk. There are several sections with steep elevation gain, and trekkers should be prepared for sustained uphill climbs.
Day 1: Steep Initial Climb
The first day includes an elevation gain of nearly 3,000 feet over approximately 6 km. This makes the opening section fairly demanding and is a good early test of your endurance.
A steady pace is important here. Rather than rushing through the climb, trekkers should focus on maintaining a comfortable rhythm and conserving energy for the days ahead.
Day 3: Gehroli Patal to Abin Kharak
The trail from Gehroli Patal toward Abin Kharak includes a noticeable uphill section. As you climb higher, the forest gradually becomes thinner and you eventually reach the treeline near the beginning of the spectacular Bedni Bugyal.
This transition from dense forest to open alpine terrain is one of the most beautiful parts of the route.
Day 5: Bedni Bugyal to Patar Nachauni
The trail begins with a steep climb for roughly an hour as you ascend towards a saddle. Once you cross this section, the route becomes comparatively easier, with a gradual descent towards Patar Nachauni.
The open surroundings make this section particularly rewarding despite the initial climb.
Day 6: Patar Nachauni to Bhagwabasa
This is another demanding day on the Roopkund route.
The first part involves approximately three hours of steep ascent towards Kalu Vinayak. After reaching the top, the trail gradually descends towards Bhagwabasa.
Because of the altitude and sustained climbing, this section should be approached at a controlled pace with adequate hydration and regular rest.
Day 7: Bhagwabasa to Roopkund
The final approach to Roopkund includes a steep climb during the last hour of the ascent.
The same section can become more challenging while descending, particularly when the trail is covered with snow or loose rock. There are also several closely spaced switchbacks, so careful foot placement is essential.
Technical Support on the Trail
Certain sections of the Roopkund Trek may require additional care depending on snow and trail conditions.
With Himalayan Advent, our trek leaders and trained support staff provide guidance throughout the route. Where conditions require it, appropriate technical and safety equipment such as microspikes, gaiters, helmets, ropes and other essential gear may be used.
The exact equipment required can vary depending on the season and current trail conditions.
Weather Conditions on the Roopkund Trek
Mountain weather can change quickly, and this becomes particularly important on a trek reaching nearly 16,000 feet.
Snowfall is possible around the higher sections of the route, including the Bedni Top region. Fresh snow can cover existing trails, making navigation and movement considerably more difficult.
Rain and snowfall can also transform the character of the trail within a short period. Wet trails may become slippery, while heavy precipitation can create muddy sections or increase the difficulty of river crossings.
At higher elevations, trekkers may also encounter:
Strong and sudden winds
Heavy snowfall
Thunderstorms
Lightning
Rapid temperature changes
Reduced visibility due to cloud or snowfall
For this reason, the itinerary should always be treated as weather-dependent rather than fixed.
Weather-Based Safety Decisions
At Himalayan Advent, trekker safety comes before reaching the summit or completing a particular itinerary.
Our trek leader and support team assess weather, trail conditions, snow accumulation and the physical condition of the group before deciding whether it is safe to continue.
If conditions become dangerous, the team may modify the itinerary, stop an ascent or return to a safer campsite. On a high-altitude trek, turning back when conditions demand it is not a failure—it is the right decision.
Altitude and Acclimatization
Altitude is one of the biggest challenges on the Roopkund Trek.
On several days, you may gain around 2,000 feet or more, while certain sections involve an elevation gain of over 3,000 feet. As the altitude increases, the amount of available oxygen decreases, making even familiar physical activities feel more demanding.
Above approximately 10,000 feet, trekkers can be susceptible to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
AMS can affect anyone, regardless of whether they are a beginner or an experienced trekker. Good fitness can make the physical effort easier, but fitness does not completely eliminate the risk of altitude sickness.
The key is allowing your body enough time to adjust to the increasing altitude.
Common symptoms that trekkers should not ignore include:
Headache
Nausea
Dizziness
Unusual tiredness
Loss of appetite
Difficulty sleeping
Shortness of breath
Any unusual symptoms at altitude should be reported to the trek leader immediately rather than being ignored or treated as normal tiredness.
Altitude Safety with Himalayan Advent
Himalayan Advent maintains a strong focus on altitude safety during the trek. Our team carries essential high-altitude first-aid and emergency equipment and monitors trekkers for signs of altitude-related problems.
Depending on the situation and availability at the trek location, emergency resources may include oxygen support, medical kits and evacuation equipment.
The most important safety rule remains simple: never hide symptoms from your trek leader. Early reporting gives the team a better chance to respond before a minor problem becomes serious.
Emergency Exits on the Roopkund Trek
Because Roopkund is a remote high-altitude trek, emergency evacuation can take time. The exact evacuation route depends on the location of the trekker, weather, trail conditions and the nature of the emergency.
In many situations, the safest option is to descend towards the lower sections of the trail and eventually reach Lohajung, the main base area for the trek.
From the route, Wan is an important point because it provides access towards the nearest motorable roadhead.
Depending on the circumstances, descending towards Didna village may also be considered as an alternative for reaching a lower and safer altitude. From Didna, trekkers would need to continue towards Lohajung.
The evacuation plan is therefore not one fixed route. It is determined according to the emergency, trail accessibility and prevailing weather conditions.
Medical Facilities Near the Roopkund Trek
Medical facilities become increasingly limited as you move deeper into the mountains, so trekkers should be prepared before beginning the trek.
Basic healthcare facilities are available in the surrounding region, while more serious medical cases may require evacuation to a larger hospital in the nearby towns.
Because hospital access can depend on road conditions, weather and the exact location of the emergency, trekkers should carry any personal medication they regularly require and inform the trek team about relevant medical concerns before departure.
Why Preparation Matters
Roopkund is an extraordinary Himalayan adventure, but its altitude and remote terrain should not be underestimated.
Proper physical preparation, suitable clothing, adequate hydration, acclimatization and following the instructions of your trek leader can make a significant difference.
With Himalayan Advent, the objective is not simply to take you to Roopkund. It is to help you experience the trail responsibly while making informed decisions about terrain, weather and altitude at every stage of the journey.
