Ridge treks are rare in the Indian Himalayas. Most trekking
routes either take you deep into forests or push you towards a summit, where
the reward is a short-lived panoramic view before you begin descending again.
But a ridge trek is different. Here, you walk along the natural spine of a
mountain, with valleys falling away on both sides and endless Himalayan ranges
unfolding in every direction.
Himalayan Advent, which was earlier known as Avinta Himalayas, went on the
Phulara Ridge Trek in 2016 with a group of 15 school children from Dehradun.
The beauty of the ridge and the surroundings was truly mesmerizing, and it
created a very special experience for all of us. Although we had done many
treks before, this particular experience was extremely memorable and deeply
educational for us. The children had smiles on their faces, and there was a
sense of joy that could not be expressed in words after reaching the ridge.
The Phulara Ridge Trek is one such rare Himalayan route
where this experience comes alive in its purest form. What makes it truly
special is not just the ridge itself, but the way the entire trail builds up to
it—slowly transitioning from dense forests to open meadows and finally into
that unforgettable ridge walk where the mountains feel almost within reach.
The journey begins from Sankri, a peaceful Himalayan village
nestled at around 1,920 meters. Sankri is not just a beautiful village in the
Himalayas; it is also a major base camp for several treks in the region. From
here, many popular and lesser-explored trails begin, including the Har Ki
Dun Trek, Kedarkantha Trek, Bali Pass Trek, and the Rupin
Pass Trek, along with several other hidden Himalayan routes.
The first major halt on the route is Juda Ka Talab, a
serene high-altitude lake hidden inside dense forest cover. The trail leading
here is a gentle climb, but the atmosphere changes gradually as you gain
altitude. Juda Ka Talab feels almost unreal when you first see it—calm, still,
and surrounded by tall trees. In winter, it freezes completely, turning into a
white mirror reflecting the surrounding forest. Nights here are quiet and cold,
with only the sound of wind moving through the trees.
From here, the trail moves towards Bhoj Gadi via Sikolta.
This section is where the forest begins to thin, and the landscape slowly
starts shifting from enclosed greenery to open mountain views. The climb is
steady and requires endurance, but the reward keeps increasing with every turn.
Bhoj Gadi campsite sits in a wide alpine meadow with views of snow-covered
peaks like Swargarohini, Kedarkantha. The sunsets here are not
just visual experiences—they feel like slow transitions of color across the
sky, from gold to pink to deep blue.
The highlight of the entire Phulara Ridge Trek comes on Day
4 when the trail reaches the Phulara Ridge itself. This is not a summit in the
traditional sense it is a long, narrow ridge walk that gives a 360-degree view
of the Garhwal Himalayas. On one side, deep valleys drop sharply, while on the
other, layers of mountains rise endlessly. Peaks like Bandarpoonch, Kalanag,
and Swargarohini appear almost within touching distance, constantly
changing shape as clouds move across them. Walking on this ridge feels like
being suspended between earth and sky, where every step opens a new
perspective.
As the ridge gradually transitions into Pushtara Bugyal,
the landscape changes again. The rugged terrain gives way to vast meadows that
stretch like green oceans in summer and golden fields in autumn. This section
is especially memorable for its openness—after days of forest cover, suddenly
there is nothing blocking your view. It is also common to spot Himalayan monals
here, their vibrant colors flashing briefly against the grass.
The descent towards Taluka brings the journey back into
forest trails and small Himalayan hamlets. It is quieter, reflective, and often
when trekkers replay the ridge experience in their minds. A short drive from
Taluka to Sankri along the Supin River adds one last scenic touch before the
journey ends.
Phulara Ridge Trek is not about extreme difficulty or technical climbing. Its strength lies in balance—manageable ascents, diverse landscapes, and that rare ridge walk that few treks in India offer. For beginners stepping into Himalayan trekking or experienced trekkers looking for something peaceful yet visually powerful, this trail sits perfectly in between.

Phulara Ridge Trek Safety Difficulty level
Trek runs through roughly 26 km across four days of active
trekking. Your adventure begins at 6,400 ft and takes you all the way up to
12,345 ft, resulting in a cumulative altitude gain of 5,945 ft. The route
naturally includes daily ups and downs. While certain sections feature steep
inclines, they are easily managed by anyone who has done basic physical
preparation
What to Expect
Day 1 Steep Ascent: you will gain almost 3,000 feet of elevation over a 4–5 km trek. The trail climbs steeply through forest sections and can be physically exhausting.
The Ridge Climb: The initial stretch from Bhoj Gadi to the Phulara Ridge is a steep ascent. Expect to spend close to 1 hour just to reach the ridge top. In early May or June, lingering snow can make this section extra tricky.
The Ridge Walk: Once you are on the ridge, the ups and downs are gradual and highly rewarding. However, the ridge is completely exposed and windy. Layering up with windproof clothing is key to beating the sharp wind chill.

Weather Conditions-
The Weather in the Himalayas can change in a matter of minutes. Heavy rainfall or unexpected snowfall can significantly alter trekking conditions:
Rainfall: Monsoon or
sudden showers can turn the forest trails slushy, making the strenuous climb
slippery and more challenging.
Mountain Sickness (AMS)
You gain nearly 3,000 ft on the first day, the sudden elevation combined with physical exertion makes you highly susceptible to mountain sickness.
While the other days have a gradual ascent allowing your
body to adapt, the risk of altitude sickness above 10,000 ft remains very real.
Remember, the mountain sickness does not care about your fitness level. Even
the fittest trekkers can get hit if they climb too fast. Fitness makes the trek
easy, but proper acclimatization keeps you safe.
Emergency Exits & Medical Support
The Phulara Ridge features a single, linear exit route: retracing your steps back down.
Evacuation Time: In case of a medical emergency, you
will be safely guided back to Sankri, from where local jeeps are arranged to Purola.
Due to the remote location deep inside the valley and unpredictable mountain
road conditions, a full evacuation to the nearest road-head can take up to 24
hours.
Closest Medical Assistance & Hospitals:
Minor Issues: Primary medical care for minor sprains, basic cuts, or simple fractures is available at local medical centers in Mori and Purola.
Major Emergencies: For advanced healthcare or serious
medical emergencies, patients must be transferred to multi-specialty hospitals
in Dehradun, which are roughly an 8 to 9-hour drive from the trek basecamp.
Safety is Our First Priority
Himalayan Advent team, we leave no stone unturned to ensure a flawless and safe trekking experience. However, mountain safety is a shared responsibility. We expect our trekkers to strictly adhere to safety protocols.
Important: Please disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, or minor health issues to your Trek Leader during the briefing at the base camp so we can take proactive care of you on the trail.
Best time to visit this trek will be updated soon.
